This lecture is part of a series on the Intermarium, organized by the Kosciuszko Chair of Polish Studies at IWP.
In his lecture Mr. Jungwirth will present the most pressing international challenges that the Czech Republic faces today. The tone and topics of the campaign of the recent presidential elections – the first direct presidential elections in the Czech History – will be discussed, as well as the implications of the final outcome. Furthermore, Mr. Jungwirth will analyze the strained relationship that the Czech Republic has with both the EU and Russia. On one hand, the Czech Republic is in many respects an outlier within the EU; on the other hand, significant efforts are made by Russia to earn a key role in Czech energy security.
Matej Jungwirth is a native of Prague, Czech Republic who is completing his undergraduate studies at Beloit College in Wisconsin, where he is pursuing a double major in International Relations and Comparative Literature. Mr. Jungwirth is currently attending the U.S. Foreign Policy section of the Washington Semester program at American University. Fluent in Czech, English and German, Mr Jungwirth is also studying Spanish, Arabic and Russian. He is currently interning with The Institute of World Politcs.
